How to Make a Heart Pom Garland

Once again I am continuing my journey to make a Pom DIY for every holiday and for Valentine’s Day we have two! Adding to the heart pom door hanger DIY we did last week, we now have a heart pom garland to up your Valentine’s decor game. It definitely gives my mantle a positive, warm vibe and I like that I was able to make these two DIYs at the same time. Pop on a tv show and next thing you will know you will have 12 heart poms ready to go. We have a few Valentine’s DIY’s planned for you this love season ranging from a paper heart garland to a special plant spotlight on the ‘Valentine’ Hoya.
Like the door hanger, this is definitely something you could leave up year round. Drape it on your mantle, across your gallery wall, over a mirror, above a crib, the possibilities are endless. I had all the supplies for this DIY already and was happy to get rid of some of my excess yarn. The macrame and yarn were leftovers from some of my Etsy shop items so I came out spending $0. I used the 3.5in pom maker and made a total of 10 for my garland: 4 red coral, 3 peach and 3 cream.
Tips & Tricks
It can be tough to cut these into the perfect shape and there will be variance. As hard as I tried, some were smaller and some were rounder. Oh well. When in doubt, start with a larger pom. It is much easier to trim down from a larger shape than start small and have to get your cuts perfect. You can’t add back yarn.
When laying out all your poms to connect them I suggest using a tape measure stretched out and locked. I wanted it to be around 5.5 to 6 feet long so I stretched my tape measure out in the living room to about 72in and set each pom down the line. From center to center of each heart there was about 7in.
I used macrame to connect my poms because I wanted a thin, neutral option that was still strong. You could use yarn but I have found it is hard when tying the knots and adjusting the lengths to decipher what is pom yarn and what is the connector yarn. The macrame is different enough I can easily pick it out.
Yay we now have a finished garland! I hung mine up on my mantle and used tiny command strips. You can’t see them because the hearts cover them and they are so small and see-through. Luckily the cats have decided it isn’t worth their time to tear down so this should make it through the next few weeks till Valentine’s Day, or in my case I celebrate Galentine’s Day.
Hope you have fun with this one! Let me know in the comments how yours turns out or tag me on instagram @thegreenmadhouse.
